That’s a term used in basketball where one team goes all out to prevent the other side from scoring. They try to block the player who tosses the ball into play, they fight to take the ball away from the guy (see the second definition) who has it, keep them from passing to another player, and otherwise stop them from advancing down-court and scoring. It’s an all-out effort, and usually very tiring.
I’m not a basketball player and have very little experience in the game, but I’d guess it’s used very sparingly. I imagine it’s more tiring than I can imagine, so is reserved for important parts of the game. For instance, the last parts.
Another guess on my part is that the world is in the last few minutes of the spiritual ball game. Satan is conducting a full court press against Christ. But like a team that’s down by twenty points, Satan knows he’s losing.
The Bible says we’ll hear about wars, pestilence, starvation, ecological collapse, pandemics, and all sorts of horrific things when the end of days nears. Throughout history it seems every generation has been convinced the Great Tribulation is around the corner. Perhaps it is, but maybe not.
Some of the prophesies in the Bible could not have been fulfilled even twenty years ago. Not all of them HAVE been fulfilled, but at least now it’s possible. With the invention of satellite communication it’s now possible for the “whole world” to watch events as they unfold.
But back to the full court press.
Satan’s going to lose. He knows that. He can read, and the end of the story is in the book of Revelation. He gets dropped into the lake of fire, the punishment reserved for Satan and all who serve him.
As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, Satan is ticked off because he knows he’ll lose. He’s conducting a scorched earth battle to deny God as much as possible. Tactics for that cross into every aspect of life.
Satan sows discord at every level, all the way down to which bathrooms can be used by transgender individuals. Fighting that sort of battle only serves to foment the chaos and promotes divisive attitudes.
I could detail some of the other areas where Satan is fighting, but it would only seem ridiculous to people who don’t believe in spiritual warfare. But our fight isn’t against people. It’s against Satan and his fallen angels.
Jesus said if you hate someone you’ve committed murder in your heart. So don’t hate someone who you think is “just not getting it.”
Pray for your enemy.
It’s the only effective way to fight on the spiritual basketball court.
