I’m a member of the YMCA, and I exercycle regularly. Sometimes I accumulate more than five HOURS every week just on that piece of equipment. Then I walk “the track” to cool down. A couple of times every week I walk The Dog Who Would Be King, also known as The Most Spoiled Puppy In The World. Most of the time I’m there I see the same people – on the treadmill, elliptical, exercycles, or lifting weights, working out and sweating. I’m convinced very few people enjoy exercise, and would quit if they could. Sure, there are some who get a high from the endorphins, and would continue no matter what. There are others who like the effects on their body (they look better, feel better, whatever). I don’t fall into either of those categories. I’d quit if doing that wouldn’t kill me sooner or later -- probably sooner. Doing good, believing in Jesus, and otherwise living a life He would approve of is critical for our spiritual life. If we don’t put in “sweat time,” it’ll kill us – spiritually. There are some who will do this grudgingly, others who like the way they feel from doing good, and the ideal spiritual exercisers who willingly put in the “sweat time” regardless. Whatever the case, like in a previous post, we need to invest the time like those pumping iron at The Y. “I don’t mind exercise – I could sit and watch it all day.” :-)
