I’ve heard it said, “We’re not bad because we do bad things. We do bad things because we’re bad.” It’s a choice, really. One we’re predisposed to make the wrong way. Of all the sins we can imagine, the biggest one is not loving God. That’s why, when Jesus was asked which commandment is the greatest, He said, “Love God.” And the rest of the commandments follow from that. Keeping all the commandments but that one will gain you nothing. You can honor your parents, refuse to kill, not covet any of the myriad things listed, and “if you have not love,” it’s bunk. Useless. So love God. If you do, you’ll love those around you. If you love them, you won’t kill them or covet their stuff. You’ll naturally honor your parents, give to the poor, take care of the widows and orphans, and help the dispossessed. Love God, and you’ll do what He says. Sure, you’ll make mistakes. That life. But those who say they love God, and don’t follow His commands . . . . well, they’re liars. “By their fruits you will know” who really loves God.
Not Loving God
