Toward the end of World War II, Adolph Hitler knew Germany would lose. The Allies were closing in on all sides, and only time stood in the way of complete loss. So what did he do? Well, he didn’t surrender. The fact is, Hitler commanded his army to fight to the last man. He’d rather have Germany obliterated than to allow the Allies to take over. He even killed himself and demanded his body be destroyed to deny that small victory. In a way, Satan is doing the same. He’s not a fool. He’s read the Bible. He knows how it will end – complete defeat for him and those who support him. So he’s “doing a Hitler.” Long ago the material world was put under his influence, at least to a degree. Satan’s goal is a “scorched earth” retreat like the Russians used against Napoleon. Destroy everything the enemy can use while retreating. The Russians didn’t win, but they denied the win to Napoleon. God is not Napoleon, though. The absolute ruler of the universe will prevail, and Satan’s goal is to take down as many of God’s children as he can before it’s all over. The book of Revelation speaks of the end times when death and destruction prevail. People will WANT to die, probably even attempt suicide, just to escape the torment sweeping the world. They’ll fail. The only escape in that time – and now, for that matter – is to be marked as a child of God. The plagues that torment humanity will leave His children alone. That doesn’t mean they won’t suffer the effects on the world, but they’ll be in a lot better shape that the children of Satan. You’ve heard it said, “If you’re not for us, you’re against us.” In God’s case it’s never been more true. Satan is perfectly willing to let humanity suffer for his Pyrrhic victory. In that case, however, it will still be a loss to Satan.
